Heartwood Medical Practice is Currently Taking On New Patients

We are now keeping registered patients who move outside our practice boundary. However we must inform any patient requesting to remain at the Practice that our GP's are unable to visit out of area patients. Patients who are registered out of area would need either to visit a walk in centre or register as a temporary resident in their area.
Wuhan Corona Virus
The NHS in Derbyshire and Public Health England (PHE) are extremely well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.
The risk to the general public is moderate. If you have arrived back to the UK from mainland China, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau within 14 days, follow the specific advice for returning travellers.
Anyone who has travelled to China or places listed above in the last 14 days and develops symptoms of cough or fever or shortness of breath, should immediately:
- Stay indoors and avoid contact with other people as you would with the flu
- Call NHS 111 to inform them of your recent travel to the country

Like the common cold, coronavirus infection usually occurs through close contact with a person with novel coronavirus via cough and sneezes or hand contact. A person can also be infected by touching contaminated surfaces if they do not wash their hands.
The risk of being in close contact with a person with coronavirus or contaminated surfaces is very low at the current time, as members of the public who have visited Wuhan, Hubei province, China are currently in isolation.
Testing of suspected coronavirus cases is carried out in line with strict regulations. This means that suspected cases are kept in isolation, away from public areas of the GP practice and returned home also in isolation. Any equipment that come into contact with suspected cases are thoroughly cleaned as appropriate. Specific guidance has also been shared with NHS staff to help safeguard them and others. Patients can be reassured that their safety is a top priority, and are encouraged to attend all appointments as usual.
Everyone is being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to:
- Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are unwell.

Volunteers Needed for Gardening Project
If you have an hour or two to spare and are a keen gardener, or would like to learn, please help us with our gardening project at Stanton Manor Care Home, Piddocks Road, Stanton.
We are looking for keen gardeners to help us create a productive vegetable plot to help supply residents with fresh vegetables all year round.

It is a proven fact that gardening helps promote a healthy life and can improve many illnesses and long term conditions.
From September 2019, the practice will no longer be issuing paper prescriptions for repeat medications. Repeat prescriptions will all be sent electronically to your chosen chemist. The aim of this is to improve medical safety and to make things easier for patients. Patients not registered for online services can order their repeat prescriptions by telephoning the Medicines Order Line on 0115 855 0260.
A new bereavement café has been set up locally. This is an informal drop in group for anyone who has been touched by bereavement, past or present. They offer social support and a listening ear in a safe, comfortable, informal environment. This is run on the first and third Tuesday of every month 1.00-2.30pm at the Fire Station, Civic Way, Swadlincote, DE11 0AE. Practice Appointment System
With the aim to improve patients access to GPs and to combat the ever increasing demand, we are introducing a new appointment system. With effect from November, we will be offering pre-bookable telephone appointments with GPs to take place at specified times during their morning clinics.
This approach has been trialled in other GP Surgeries with great success and received lots of positive patient feedback. For patients, it allows flexibility so they can reduce unnecessary trips to the surgery, or even avoid time off work for an appointment matter that can be discussed by telephone. For GPs, we can resolve some matters more efficiently by telephone and reduce amount of "no show" patients, allowing capacity back into the system for those that need it most.

Coil and Implant Service
For your information, we now offer a coil and implant service at the practice. If you are interested in this long acting contraceptive service please book a 10 minute appointment with Dr Muogbo for coils and Dr Somarajan for implants.
Access to Medical Records
We currently offer the facility for ordering your repeat prescriptions & viewing allergies & adverse reactions online. This is via TPP SystmOne using our website www.heartwoodmedicalpractice.co.uk. If you do not already have a username and password for this system you will need to register for them either using our website or by calling into the practice to register in person.
Heartwood Medical Practice confirm that all systems are in place to allow patients to access booking appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions & view allergies and adverse reactions online.
We have been working closely with our clinical software providers to develop appropriate systems for patients to request online access to their detailed coded records using a method that is secure and safeguards the best interests of the patient. Named Accountable GP
New guidance has stated that we are now required to provide all our patients with a named GP who will have overall responsibility for the care and support that our surgery provides to them.
The named accountable GP will have overall responsibility for the care and support that our surgery provides to you but this does not prevent you from seeing any GP in the practice as you currently do.

Jaimee Coombes is setting up “Bugs Lifeline “ in memory of her 10 month old daughter Liberty, who died suddenly on 23rd August 2017. Eventually the cause of death was put down to Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome .
The aims of Bugs lifeline are to deliver emergency awareness courses to families which will cover:
Raise awareness of SIDS & SUDS
Training will be delivered by certified first aid trainers who are kindly giving up their own time for Bugs Lifeline. CVS have been a help to Jaimee, they have applied for funding to purchase five monitors which detect when a child stops breathing.
